Kampo Seminar in Israel
with Ms.Gretchen De Soriaono
I am very pleased to announce again about the new Kampo program in Israel – a Japanese diagnosis and treatment Using Chinese and Japanese herbal medicine.
The Kampo program teacher is Ms Gretchen De Soriano.
Ms. De Soriano has many years of experience in Japanese medicine: teaching and practicing in acupuncture and Kampo herbal medicine.
Ms.Gretchen is a pioneer of Kampo medicine in the West and she is part of a long Kampo lineage of Kampo masters. She studies one-to-one under Dr Otsuka for eight years using the Japanese language, and attending clinical sessions at each sessions. Tailoring this Japanese teaching format to the Western complementary medicine is her unique contribution to making Kampo global.
The upcoming seminar is our first and part of the complete Kampo program leading to a certificate of “Kampo Practitioner”. Our first seminar is a "taster". Attendance at the taster is with NO obligation to continue to full registrar for the entire program!
Kampo is a Japanese herbal treatment system that mainly based on an interpretation of the Chinese classics according to Japanese experience. In particular the tactile abdominal diagnosis is well developed.
I, Ofir Bloch will be hosting Ms Gretchen for all her seminars here in Tel-Aviv.
The upcoming seminar will be three days long, a weekend seminar 10-12.5.18, and will consist of the following topics:
• Gaining basic vocabulary, and processes of Kampo medicine
• Learning formulas for chronic and acute conditions
• Learning the Shō of important formula
• Every seminar day will consist of theoretical and practical session combining real patient-interaction.
Since this seminar will have practical sessions, the number of students is limited!
Also, this seminar is a rare opportunity to learn from a Kampo master that is willing to come to Israel and teach us from her vast experience.
The seminar will be taught through the English language and will be suitable for Chinese herbal background!
Chinese classic formulas will be part of the syllabus, but the Kampo teaching format is not reliant on teaching and reciting single herbs (as in the TCM teaching method). Each formula is taught as being directed to a "type person" or "stage of illness" substantiated according to collection of symptoms and body type.
In the upcoming seminar several formulas will be studied according to the following western diseases:
Common cold and influenza, Asthma, Bronchitis, Pulmonary TB, High blood pressure, Valval heart problems and Panic attacks.
:Each attendee will get Ms.Gretchen's 2nd edition Kampo book

Information of the complete program
Upcoming seminar will be the first and part of the complete program towards certificate of “Kampo Practitioner”.
Participating this seminar will not obligate membership the whole program.
The entire Kampo certificate course will take two years.
The complete program consists of four models:
• On the first module: we will study the Kampo terminology and explain how Kampo diagnosis is achieved.
• On the second module: will study the abdominal diagnosis of Kampo.
• On the third module: will study the pharmaceutical actions of plants, and modern disease, aging, unique conditions in the local environment of Israel in the era 2000, etc.
• On the fourth module: we read the abbreviated Japanese version of the Shan Han Lun, and relevant classics, and review advanced Japanese practices and texts.
Each teaching day has two halves, a morning classroom, plus the afternoon in-patient clinical.
Also, in each teaching day we will learn several key formulas and several key disease patterns. Learning formulas is the basic learning in this Kampo program.
Program syllabus is Gretchen's and Nigel's book: "Kampo a Clinical Guide to Theory and Practice". The book will be given as a present to each seminar attendee.
Structurally, the first seminar counts as part of module 1 towards the certificate program. The plan is to teach two modules a year (this may vary). We plan to complete the full program in two years.
The program is rich of knowledge and diagnosis according to the traditional and modern Japanese style.
The Tel Aviv program is based on Ms De Soriano’s London course in Japanese Kampo Medicine. At the end of each module the students will attend a short exam and then will be given a certificate of "Kampo practitioner" for that module.
You are welcome to watch the webinar we conducted with Ms. de soriano for the upcoming seminar.

Chinese Medicine has already been practiced widely in Japan in the 6th century in acupuncture, moxibation and herbal medicine.
Until the 9th century, Kampo medicine books written only in Japanese but there was attempt to combine with Buddhist philosophy.
Over the years there were several traditional schools involved in Japan, some more practical and some more theoretical. The "Kohoha" movement that became stronger in the 16th century, wanted to revive the chinese scripts but still emphasized the practice and observation of the Japanese perspective.
